Take Care of your investment

A little care now and then will prolong the life of your boots.

According to our shoemaker, there is no clearly defined limit to how long a pair of Lundhags boots will last. It’s more about how long you want them to last. Take care of them and you’ll be able to use them for decades, without a problem.

Unlike some other precious products, our boots gain nothing from sitting around and aging. Instead, they should be used – preferably all the time. This is perhaps impossible for most people, but try to put them on and take a walk at least once or twice a month. Your boots will then retain the shape of your feet. When you are not using your boots, store them in a cool place.

If they become really wet on the inside, it is important not to dry them at too high of a temperature (max 40°c). This means that you should avoid drying your boots in a tumble dryer or drying cabinet, which can easily become too hot. When you come home, always take out the insoles and place them in the shaft, otherwise it will take a long time for the insoles and boots to dry in the front toe area. If your boots
are dirty, clean them with lukewarm water and a soft brush, sometimes even on the inside to remove dirt and salts. If you are not going to use your boots for a while, make sure they are properly treated before storing. Liquid wax is a great way to preserve the leather. Cellular rubber is maintenance free and does not need to be treated.

When the boots are new, treat them directly after you use them for the first three or four times. Try and do it when you get home and while the leather is still a bit humid. Once you have used them for a while, you will see where more lubrication is needed in order to provide maximum protection. For boots made from Nubuck, there are waxes that can help maintain the special, suede-like surface, but if you want the
best protection against water, use a wax for glossy leathers. By doing so, however, the Nubuck will loose its appearance and may darken slightly.

If you want to give your boots the real Lundhags look, use Lundhags Leather Dressing, which is a sweet smelling classic. We cook it ourselves from animal fat, tar and beeswax using an old recipe and only natural ingredients. Lundhags Leather Dressing works best with boots that are already somewhat soft, so don’t use it if you want to preserve the leather’s stiffness. For best results apply by massaging the dressing into the leather with your warm fingers. If your fingers are cold, warm the boots with a hair dryer set on low heat.
